biography

Andris Jansons was born in Latvia in 1939. He emigrated to Australia with his parents at the age of ten and the family settled in Adelaide. From his childhood and school years Andris’ creative and artistic talents were evident. He studied architecture at Adelaide University and later, working as an architectural draftsman, he furthered his understanding of such things as perspective, shadow projection and design principles.

Though basically self taught, Andris sought the advice of experienced artists such as Rubery Bennett, Sir Ivor Hele and W. Eric Thorp. In 1971 Andris became a professional artist furthering his experience overseas. His first solo exhibition was held in Adelaide in 1976 and since then he has shown in all Australian states and the United States of America.

Andris believes his talent to be a special gift and one that he doesn’t take lightly. He finds his enthusiasm is buoyed by the progress he makes and that, in turn, encourages him to further effort and achievement.

His paintings can be found in the collections of major companies as well as private collections in all states of Australia and overseas. He is often in demand to tutor art groups and to judge competitions.

Andris’ paintings provide a refreshing and sincere interpretation of the Australian countryside and coastal scenes, executed with a sensitivity that only he can impart. His unique interpretation and feelings pervade each subject and express nature’s moods.

Andris has always had a fascination with water and he has spent a good deal of his leisure time swimming, diving and fishing. He now believes he has a good understanding of the many nuances of this primal natural element: “What I try to convey is a sense of beauty in nature in all its various moods. Light and water are the two elements I principally use to express this idea. Radiant sunsets over calm or stormy waters, or misty sunrises over mountains and trees are fleeting moments of grandeur that I try to capture. In my paintings I am trying to bring relaxation, pleasure and a glimpse of the beauty and serenity of nature to people in today’s fast-paced and often stressful existence. Art exists to nurture the soul.”
