GERARD A. 'HARDY' TIARKS (1868 - 1951)

biography

Born in 19 November 1868 in Virginia, USA.
Arrived in WA c1898.
Died in Melbourne 1951.

Studies: Hatherley’s, London.

His works were mostly figurative and landscape paintings in oil and watercolour.

Arrived in Melbourne 1900 and exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society in 1903 and again in 1908 when he lived at Hawthorn.

Christened Gerard, he became known as Hardy due to his sturdy build.

Until about 1917 he signed his pictures 'G.A. Tiarks' and thereafter 'Hardy', thus leading to the misconception in later years that there were 2 artists of similar style painting at the same time.
