biography Known for her unique interpretation of colour, light and technical expertise, Jo-Anne Seberry loves and enjoys the challenge of working with pastels. Her subjects are depicted with sensitivity to create a moment in time, to which everyone can relate. Jo-Anne is a Melbourne artist who, under the guidance of John Balmain, further developed her understanding of the principles of tonal value, form and colour. Influenced by the French Impressionists, she attended a Monet exhibition and was fascinated by the exquisite use of light and colour, which gave her the impetus to explore new and exciting ways of expressing her work. This led to an intensive period of painting and studying, which took her overseas to the galleries of Europe and the USA, where she studied with master pastellist Daniel Green in New York. A trip to Italy gave her the opportunity to experience the subtle European light and as a result, on her return, she held a successful solo exhibition. In 1989 Jo-Anne was selected as a full member of the American Pastel Society. She has been selected twice to exhibit in their prestigious annual exhibition, and in 1990 won the Board of Directors Award. In 2008 Jo-Anne received two Honorable Mentions in the 9th Annual Pastel 100 Competition run by the prestigious American publication "The Pastel Journal" which attracted over 3500 entries. She is also a member of the Old Watercolour Society of Victoria. Some of Jo-Anne’s paintings have been reproduced on covers for novels by Pascoe Publishing, and her work was featured in 1993 Australian Art Calendars. Recently she has had a painting published in the Best of Pastel II (by Rockport Publishing, U.S.A.). Each year the American Pastel Magazine (“The Pastel Journal”) selects the best 100 pastels from around 3500 entries, and in 2007 Jo-Anne received honourable mentions in the Landscape and Portrait sections, and again in 2009 in the Landscape section. She has also been involved in a number of solo and group exhibitions, and her paintings are in private and corporate collections around the world. Awards |
